The Floodplain Footy (FPF) was started by myself, Steve Rusnack, and Nik Cameron. We initially didn’t have a complete direction, and looking back we realize where things can be improved. Over our first year, we started to get a better idea of who we were and where we are going. Now as the site enters it’s 2nd year of existence, things are changing and hopefully for the better.

The first major change is in administration. Nik and I were both editor-in-chief, but I will now take over as top dog. With Nik having his hand in other projects; attending school, and most importantly, a new baby, he has decided to take a backseat. I am happy to report that he will still contribute from time to time.

My first major decision to improve the FPF is to move it to a domain that will be easier to remember and access. Starting now, the Floodplain Footy has moved to www.fpfooty.com . Though the new website is still a work in progress, it will provide all the news, stories, and interviews that were available on the old site, including archives and links. With the help of Mitch Morice, fellow St.Louligan and FPF Contributor & Technical Administrator, and Brad DeMundbrun, also fellow St.Louligan and Technical Advisor, when the website is complete it will not only look great but be a great source for all your St.Louis soccer news.

Regarding direction, as you may have noticed in the past, the FPF was all over the place covering everything from St.Louis soccer to the EPL. I’m happy to announce that from this point on the Floodplain Footy will only cover St.Louis area soccer. This of course will include the St.Louis Lions, Illinois Piasa, SLU & SIUE and any other teams that may come into existence or that our audience demands. We will continue to have interviews with pro players and players on the rise and post team schedules and press releases.

And I would like to stress that, with the help of our contributor Kyle Scarborough and correspondence with Lions GM James Shipley, FPF will be your #1 source for all the St.Louis Lions news and updates.

I am also very excited to announce that our friend, St.Louis native, former Lions team member and newly signed forward for the Columbus Crew, Tommy Heinemann will be submitting his own post on the Floodplain Footy. His post will be a journal of his experience with the Crew in the MLS, everything from training to gameday and in between.

And finally, we recognize the importance of Supporters Groups in the soccer world and so every now and then we will be teaming up and helping out with these groups, namely the St.Louligans.

I’m confident in this new chapter of the FPF and it’s my goal to simply help the St.Louis soccer community become more informed of what’s going on around us. I’m very open to comments and suggestions as I feel that the key to success is communication and cooperation. I hope what you find is useful and informative. Cheers!

Steve Rusnack, Editor in Chief

Sockers, Kings Clinch Western, Eastern Divisions
2/10/11 - Any hint of suspense in the Eastern and Western Division races was swept away in Tacoma when the Sockers came to town and dominated the Stars for 120 minutes in a 13-4 and 5-0 twin killing.

The wins propelled the Sockers (11-2) to their second straight Western Division title. Across the country an 11-2 win by the Cincinnati Kings (12-2) over Illinois, combined with a Detroit loss to Louisville clinched a third straight Eastern Division crown for the Kings.

Cincinnati’s win also advanced them to the Semifinals of the US Open against Louisville. San Diego’s win Saturday assured them a spot in the Final. The Sockers, the defending tournament champions, will host this year’s US Open Final on March 19.

Player of the Week

Riley Swift, San Diego Sockers

A week after Craig Salvati’s historic shutout Riley Swift became the first PASL-Pro goalkeeper to capture a shutout on the road, blanking Tacoma 5-0. Tacoma’s best scoring chance came in the second quarter when they were awarded a penalty kick shootout, but Swift stymied Greg Howes’ attempt to preserve a 1-0 lead. Besides Saturday’s whitewash, Swift also got the win Friday allowing just four goals. Swift and the Sockers went 2-0 in Tacoma where the Stars had been 5-0 on the season.

Kick Starters – Conversations you should be having about the PASL-Pro

Ze Roberto or Zero Berto?

The Sockers unsung defender was Riley Swift’s secret weapon in securing Saturday’s shutout with several goal line blocks and clearances. San Diego’s defensive ace has also gone scoreless this season, but he does have eight assists.

Horne O’ Plenty

The Louisville Lightning re-entered the wilcard race with their third straight win and David Horne scored four points in their 14-7 win in Ohio Saturday. Horne, the Lightning General Manager, has only played seven games this year as he has spent more time focusing on his front office duties. His off-field stats are more impressive as the Lightning set a franchise attendance mark with 1,587 at Mockingbird Valley Sports Complex on Friday.

North American Championship in Cincinnati

Four of the six teams have already qualified, including Cincinnati, San Diego, La Raza de Guadalajara, and Sidekicks Estado de Mexico. Those four teams all qualified last year as well. The CMISL winner will join them and it will likely be either Edmonton (2009) or Calgary (2010) who have also qualified in the past. The 6th seed, however, will go to a newcomer. Tacoma, Tijuana, Detroit, Louisville, Illinois, and Kitsap are still mathematically viable candidates to take the last spot. The games will take place March 10-12 at Cincinnat Gardens and a weekend pass for all five games is only $25.

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis head men’s soccer coach Mike McGinty today announced the addition of four student-athletes to the Billikens’ roster. Midfielder Kingsley Bryce (Plano, Texas/Jesuit Prep), forward Robbie Kristo (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) and defender Anthony Manning (Mesquite, Texas/Mesquite) begin their four years of eligibility in the fall. Junior midfielder Cal McKee (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) has transferred from Santa Clara University and has two years of eligibility remaining.

“The theme of our recruiting plan for this year was to identify players with all-around soccer ability in addition to strong character, and we were successful in this first wave of recruits.” McGinty said. “Within this class we have definitely added size and athleticism. Each player we are bringing in will contribute in a different way, but they all have the underlying theme of being great soccer players and great people.”

Bryce is the brother of former Billiken Charles Bryce. Playing for the nationally renowned soccer program at Jesuit Prep in Dallas, Bryce helped the 25-0 Rangers to the Texas 5A state championship his senior year. As a junior, he earned district MVP honors after recording 14 goals. Bryce played club ball for the Dallas Texans Academy. Among the team’s accomplishments were capturing the 2009 State Cup and the 2009 National League championship.

“Kingsley has a great work rate and comes from a great club system in Dallas,” McGinty said. “He is an extremely versatile player who will be able to step in and help us at multiple positions.”

Kristo earned first-team All-State plaudits after ranking as one of the St. Louis area’s leading scorers with 27 goals and eight assists. He was tabbed a first-team All-Metro pick by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and was named the 2010 Suburban South Conference Player of the Year. As a senior, he led the Vikings to a 17-5-2 record, the best mark in school history. Kristo was called to the U.S. Soccer U-18 team camp and is a member of the St. Louis Scott Gallagher U.S. Soccer Development Academy team.

“Robbie is one of the top players in the St. Louis area,” McGinty said. “He is a fantastic attacking player and has a great nose for the goal. We are excited to get him into our program and look forward to watching him blossom. He has all the tools to be an attacking force in collegiate soccer.”

Manning claimed district MVP honors after notching six goals his senior season at Mesquite High School, leading the Skeeters to a district championship. As a junior, he was the team’s Defensive Player of the Year in addition to drawing honorable-mention All-Conference laurels. Manning played in the same club system as Bryce with the Dallas Texans, though on a different team. Manning helped his squad to the Disney Soccer Showcase and Classic League Grand Championships.

“Anthony plays center back, which is a key position for us with the graduation of James Dice,” McGinty said. “His height and athleticism will help provide an immediate presence to our back line.”

McKee played two seasons at Santa Clara, including last year when he helped the Broncos to the West Coast Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He notched the game-winning goal in Santa Clara’s win against rival St. Mary’s, and later in the year assisted on a goal in SCU’s 2-0 win against Gonzaga that gave the Broncos the league title. As a redshirt freshman in 2008, he started 16 games for Santa Clara. McKee prepped at Chaminade and was on the Red Devils’ 2006 state championship team with Billiken teammates Mike Roach and Michael Robson.

“Cal is a hard worker who is already a seasoned collegiate soccer player,” McGinty said. “His experience at Santa Clara should allow him to come into the program and immediately compete for playing time.”

More additions to the roster will be announced on SLUBillikens.com as they become available.

Have you been to a Piasa game this year? If you haven’t, you have really missed out on some quality professional indoor soccer. But even if you have, you may not be that aware of just how good our Illinois Piasa team is. Below we’ve provided some statistics of this season’s team as well as some other information. I encourage you to read it and to get out to see a Piasa game soon. Cheers!

First off, if you aren’t familiar with the PASL, it’s an indoor league that spans the continent, consisting of 14 teams at the league’s highest level (Pro) and doesn’t use scoring gimmicks like other leagues. One goal equals one goal, no matter where you score it from.

The PASL Pro is divided into 4 Divisions. The Piasa reside in the Frontier Division along with Springfield Demize (Springfield, MO), Wenatchee Fire (WA) and Kitsap Pumas (also from WA). Currently the Piasa sit at the top of their division with a half game lead over Kitsap and are 5th overall in the entire league. The Piasa have played 8 games and have 3 league games remaining, 2 of them at home. The team has scored 72 goals, an average of 9 per game, while allowing 41 goals, just a little over 5 per game.

The Piasa have 2 players in the league’s top 10 scoring leaders, and 1 right on the cusp of making that list as well. Roger Gemoules is 6th in the league in goals scored with 17 and is 2nd in the league in assists with 15, putting him tied for 3rd in the league with 32 pts. Jon Fridal’s 12 goals put him tied for 10th in the league as does his 9 assists, making his 21 pts at 10th place on that list. Meanwhile Mike Utley, who has played in 1 less game then the other two players, has 11 goals and 5 assists, his 11 goals putting him just outside that top 10 honor.

Piasa goalkeeper Greg Crook is also enjoying a great season. Greg has started all 8 games and has won 6 of those. He has a 75% Save Percentage and his 5.13 GAA puts him 2nd in the league. He is also 3rd in the league in total saves with 128, even though he has played 3 less games then the leader and 2 less then the man in front of him.

Out of the 14 teams, the Piasa sit right in the middle at 7th in attendance. Even with the St.Louligan presence, the attendance averages at 325 per game, just 34 per game behind Detroit.

With two games left, we need to make sure we finish ahead of Detroit. They should only be able to beat us at crime rates and hockey. The Piasa play at home Saturday night @8pm vs Louisville and their final home game will be on Saturday, Feb 26 @ 8:30pm vs Ohio Vortex. So come out and support the Piasa, cheer along with the St. Louligans and have a great time.

2/2/11 - The San Diego Sockers and Cincinnati Kings stayed far ahead of the class last weekend. San Diego (9-2) demolished Tijuana 13-6, a game that included a 10-goal run for the Sockers. Cincinnati (11-2) shut out Ohio, 6-0.

Both teams also set new franchise attendance records; San Diego had 3,120 at Del Mar Arena and Cincinnati had over 1,400 at Cincinnati Gardens.

The Kings can clinch their third straight Eastern Division crown with a win over Illinois Friday and a Detroit loss to Louisville.

The Sockers have one hurdle left in their quest for a second straight Western Division title. This weekend they travel to Tacoma for games on Friday and Saturday. The Sockers can clinch the division by winning both games. On the flip side, the Stars (8-4) can take a half game lead by sweeping the Sockers. Of maybe greater consequence, Saturday’s game is also the Semifinal game of the US Open. The winner will host the final in March.

For the first time two players will split the Player of the Week award. Salvati is the league’s top goalie at 10-1 with a 4.93 GAA. He was credited with 8 saves in Cincinnati’s 6-0 win over Ohio. It was the PASL-Pro’s third shutout in its three year history, but it was the first 60 minute shutout against a fellow PASL-Pro team.

Wright, the only active player from the original MISL, refuses to act his age. The 41-year old scored four first half goals against Tijuana and added two assists for a six point night, including a natural hat trick.

Howes and Weinberg, the Stars Come Out at Night

Greg Howes is arguably the greatest active player in indoor soccer. He’s still in his prime and has three league MVPs under his belt. But up until recently, he has kept a pretty low profile. Heading into their big showdown with San Diego, Howes and teammate Ian Weinberg have been playing their best soccer. In fact, Howes has risen to 2nd in the league in points, while Weinberg is 6th. It may all be for naught if the Stars don’t put up a good showing against the Sockers this weekend.

Super Whatsit?

The US will be preoccupied by the Super Bowl this Sunday, but that doesn’t mean a day off for the PASL-Pro’s Canadian and Mexican teams. Winnipeg will host Calgary and Tijuana will host Intech.

US Open Update

The San Diego Sockers and Tacoma Stars will meet in the US Open Semifinal on Saturday, but first will be the Eastern Quarterfinal between Cincinnati and Illinois on Friday. The winner of that game will face Louisville in the other Semifinal.

Revolucion Travel North, Go South

1/26/11 - Revolucion Tijuana failed their test against the San Diego Sockers last week, but were thrown out of the classroom altogether this weekend with losses in Tacoma and Wenatchee.

Tijuana lost in Tacoma 8-6 on Saturday to fall to 5-4. They seemed primed for a win in Wenatchee to go home with a split, but, instead the Fire pulled a wild 16-13 upset. Wenatchee had been 2-17 in PASL-Pro play going back to 2008/09, including 0-3 this year. They lost their first two games of the season by a combined 27-6. Since then, however, they are 4-1 with the one loss coming by an 11-10 score to Tacoma.

Tijuana, now 5-5, trails Detroit and Tacoma in the wild card race.

Player of the Week

Mark Conrad, Kitsap Pumas

The Pumas broke through with a signature win, finally getting by Tacoma, 8-5, to improve to 6-2. Conrad led the way with three goals and three assists. The 6’3″ Seattle native kept the Pumas 1/2 game ahead of the Illinois Piasa in the Frontier Division.

Lightning Struck Down in Eastern Hunt

The Louisville Lightning were considered favorites by some to upend the Cincinnati Kings for the Eastern Division crown. Instead the Lightning have been officially eliminated from the division title chase after completing just half their schedule. The Lightning (2-6) lost 10-7 to Cincinnati (10-2) on Saturday and now will have to turn their dimming playoff hopes toward the wild card. It’s not hard to see where things have gone wrong. The Lightning lost second leading scorer Glenn Volk in the offseason and Safet Kovacevic and David Horne have combined for just seven points while goalkeeper Frank Peabody is 0-5.

Armed and Dangerous

The Wenatchee Fire are suddenly an offensive force to be reckoned with and the goals are coming from all over the field. Earlier this year goalkeeper Tristen Ryles scored with his feet, but Sunday Matt Stalnik became the first PASL-Pro goalkeeper to score with his arm, throwing the ball the length of the field into Tijuana’s empty net. Then a minute and a half later he did it again. Stalnik’s first goal was the eventual game winner.

After months of uncertainty and speculation, AC St.Louis has been forced to bring their young life to an end. It was an inaugural season filled with highs and lows. It was a team filled with young talent and even a few local players, some who turned out to be heroes and fan favorites. For the fans themselves, it was a long awaited taste of professional soccer in St.Louis. For many of those same fans it became a second home where friendships were created, great times were had and many ever lasting memories were formed. Despite all the problems that seemed to curse the team from the beginning, overall the AC St.Louis experience was one that was worth the trouble and heartache. We’ll miss you Saints, but with death comes life and we see great things on the horizon. Thanks for the memories, though short they were deep.

It seems like we’ve dealt with unbalanced schedules in the past now doesn’t it…back when we used to go to a different kind of game… Well, none of that matters now. This past weekend the Ohio Vortex came in looking for a victory over our boys, and thankfully the were sent home without one. The St. Louligans brought it…loudly..and incessantly once again. Again, we became fast friends with the opposing goalie as well…

Duke midfielder, and St.Louis University High School Alum, Cole Grossman was picked by the Columbus Crew today, in the 2nd round of the MLS Superdraft. Cole had 10 goals and 8 assists for Duke this season and impressed many as an invitee to the 2010 MLS Combine that took place earlier this week. Cole becomes yet another player from St.Louis to join the growing MLS ranks. All the best to you Cole, we’ll be pulling for you.

Later that day in the 3rd Round, and #50 overall, DC United picked Goalkeeper Joe Willis from the University of Denver. Joe went to Chaminade High School and was a product of Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. Joe also played for the Real Colorado Foxes in the PDL. Out of the 54 total picks in the draft, only 3 of the picks taken were keepers. To be one of the three keepers says a lot about Joe’s abilities. Congratulations Joe!
